What is this?...

At the top left corner (in portrait position), there's something in the black area. Is it a sensor? A camera? Can't find it anywhere in the manual (unless I missed it). I just happened to notice it a couple days ago, then got a screen cover and there's actually a cut out for it on that. Thanks!

It's a sensor. The story goes that the Fire was set to have a brightness sensor, but it was killed at the last minute. The hardware still exists.
