I looked at the sticky on Rooting, and I think I know the answer, but want to make sure. I have been able to install Icecream Sandwich on my Fire. I take it that that is not the same as rooting, right.

Assuming that they are not, what does each one allow me to do?

Actually, if you have installed Ice Cream Sandwich on your Kindle, then you are most likely rooted. On your Windows computer you have Admin Accounts and regular user accounts. Typically, Android devices run as regular user accounts. When you "root" your device, you are basically giving your account admin rights. This doesn't change your operating system, but the rights that you have to access parts of it. Once you have full access you can do a myriad of things, like load other operating systems like ICS. Does that answer your question?
