As far as I know there is no real reason that they chose to name each version after a desert in alphabetical order, but I like it, it's fun. Many companies have strange code names for products, especially before release, but these names are the same as companies that name things after stars, etc. It is eaasier than saying "4.4 through 4.4.2" to say "Kit Kat".

It's also in alphabetical order. The first two versions (A and B) did not have dessert names. C/Cupcake started the dessert theme. 4.4 is Kitkat but was long rumored to be "Key Lime Pie". Now, I see 4.5 is rumored to be "Lollipop"

    Samsung Galaxy Note 1 (i717) CM11 4.4.2 kitkat (jamied)

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (i317) unlocked Ditto Note 3.1.1 (4.3) ROM

Could also be Licorice. Or Lemon Meringue Pie. Or KitKat (there were two major versions of Eclair and three of Jelly Bean). Or it could be 5.0.

I'd vote Lemonade even if it's not a dessert name

If you're ever in the vicinity of Mountain View, CA, you really ought to pay a visit to the Android HQ, where all of the dessert statues are: Kit Kat statue joins the crew at Google HQ | Android Central

When KitKat was announced Google said:

"Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert"

I find it to give 'sweet' names makes talking about android more exciting. Also using Alphabetical order gives a sense to how old versions are (Gingerbread is older than KitKat, G comes before K).

Also, take a look into how Ubuntu codenames are.
