Sorry I might sound foolish. But android L boasts of locking the phone completely and preventing a thief from factory resetting it. Can this fully be coded in software?
Isnt that a hardware feature like Apple did?

Wont the thief just flash a rom or factory reset from the boot menu?

Very confused. Does google mean only nexus devices get anti theft facilities?

It could easily be done by sending a piece of code the will brick the device. Even Nexus devices can be bricked, it just takes specific things to happen.

Except the point is not to brick the phone completely, but make it unrecoverable to anyone without the owner's credentials. It can probably be done via software rather than hardware, but would require partitioning such that the factory reset doesn't affect the lockdown partition, which gets referenced in any other phone function.

Thanks for correcting. I have no idea why I had bricking the device stuck in my head.
