I may be be mistaken but I believe the default runtime environment for Kit Kat is Dalvik while the default for Lollipop is ART. The migration of apps from one to the other is not smooth for a lot of folks and I think this is what may be heavily contributing to problems when a factory reset is not done after the upgrade. After reading so many Lollipop horror stories I was so very skeptical myself and didn't want the upgrade but I went ahead and applied it to a new G3 and then immediately did a factory reset. It has worked flawlessly so far with no lag, random restarts, etc.

I write all that to say this, I know it may be a irritant but a factory reset after Lollipop is highly recommended.

Just got my update notification on my 2014 moto x. Little reluctant to install it. Doesn't sound like a clean install. Any X owners having issues?

No big issues for me at all (2014 Moto X on AT&T), but I was prepared to do a factory reset immediately afterward, which I did. The only thing I didn't backup beforehand and lost were my text messages, but I didn't care about those anyway. The biggest hassle I had was with my Power Toggles widget not showing up in selectable widgets. I reinstalled the app but still no widget. I did a cache wipe and of course it reappeared, but I probably only needed to just reboot the phone.

It seems like when you convert to something there are always more issues. Like with converting from Windows XP to Windows 7 vs a fresh install of Windows 7.

I know with KitKat a cache wipe was all I needed, and I don't have tons of apps, so that might have been all I needed with Lollipop too - but there does seem to be a trend of those who have done a factory reset after upgrading have fewer if any problems than those who haven't, which is why I was prepared to do it no matter what. Besides I kind of like the idea of a fresh start, and I always end up discarding stuff I don't really need (like way too many text messages). Lollipop is just fine for me, with no lag whatsoever, and my battery life so far is better than with KitKat. I am not crazy about the sound settings or the way it looks, but that's what's so great about Android. There's always an app/widget for that (already added a toggle for sound settings) and another launcher if the looks don't grow on me.

A factory reset would go a long way to resolving most of your problems. You need to do a backup first because this will cause data and app loss.

I totally agree!! These bright [language]color schemes for all menus and such are much less attractive, I liked all my black menus, I hate the alarm settings, it doesn't automatically still sound the alarm when you have the phone on mute, you have to go into settings and choose when you want the phone to interrupt the mute mode, essentially setting two types of alarms, a needless waste which made me late for work today because the settings for my alarm had also changed and it did not go off with volume at all and silenced after 1 min. I also don't like how it doesn't flash my notification LED even though I have it set to do so, and while charging it has the red light on the whole time instead of before where it would be red, then flash when I had a message, it doesn't flash the LED when I have messages now so I have to keep powering the phone on to check, instead of just being able to see it at a glance. Contacts keeps crashing when I don't even have it open, This whole thing has been so terribly inconvenient and horrible, its pissing me off constantly. I don't mind change when it makes sense and is an IMPROVEMENT, but Android 5.0 IS NOT!!! Please give us the options back that were in the last version!!! I'm gonna try yet ANOTHER reset (did one last week due to facebook issues), and see if I can keep the old OS somehow.

Just wanting to comiserate with yall... I was going to root and install the original OS on my 2012 Nexus 7 because each successive OS update has rendered my device to a frustrating crawl, so I decided to give 5.0.2 a chance since Google had already downloaded it for me. After the initial reboot when I logged in it said my password was correct but that decryption failed and the only thing I could do was to restore factory settings (and lose 2 years of data). I did not accept this as a valid option and reboot several more times with the same error. Anyways, I lucked out and one of those reboots took a bit longer than the others and the screen showed that it was updating all my apps. Afterwards I was able to login and retrieve my data but if I had not worked as an IT support specialist for ages (I refuse to be bullied or intimidated by electronic devices) I probably would have relucantly and painfully hit that system restore button. So now I have a extremely slow (even after wiping the system cache) and, in my opinion, ugly new OS. Apps take a long time to open, crash and freeze left and right (especially Facebook). One of the things I dislike about new OSs is that they require more mouse clicks, screen swipes, etc to do the same task a few OSs previously. What once was easy is now tedious. Microsoft headed in this direction in all of there post-XP OSs (Win8 is an outright embarrassment). I had a little more respect for Google but the fact that they do install software and system updates without the owner's acceptance (even when software updates are disabled) is making me wonder if they are the new Microsoft, for some reason attempting to force users to use their new clunky interface. Its frustrating that there is no way to disable the auto downloading of the new OS, I had spent a month in Myanmar where internet speeds are at 90s dialup. I had problems communicating with the people back home and attributed it to the local internet but then that darned icon appeared at the top of the screen indicating that I had a new system update to install. It really pissed me off that my personal (and and not to mention vitally important) communication had to compete with some stupid OS update I didnt ask for, let alone need. End of rant...

So yesterday I actually got a prompt on my Nexus 7 to download the 5.1 update. They actually asked me whether I wanted to download instead of just pushing it to my device. After the 5.0.2 update my device was barely usable (the entire OS was slow), clunky, with apps constantly crashing. I decided to try the 5.1 update and almost immediately I noticed a difference. Its back to its normal speed and while Facebook still crashes I can use it for 15 min or before that happens (and thats really all the time I want to spend on it anyway). I still dont like the "improvements" of Lollipop but this update has allowed me to comfortably use my device again.

Lollipop is iphones best advertisement yet, my wonderful Galaxy s5 is ruined. Doesn't Verizon test these things? I bought the phone to be more efficient, not to fiddle with and yes, I will work through all of the issues in due time, but Settings is now my most used icon.
(end rant)

Adding my two cents. Just was forced to update. Some of these complaint threads are like a year old, so clearly, they're not going to fix anything and I'm very unhappy. My phone went from being fast, easy and good looking to slow, clunky, freezing, stuttering, UGLY and terrible. My memory is suddenly full and it's screaming about my battery overheating (it NEVER did that before...). The colors are horrible and you can't change them. I can't control the sounds as well as I used to (some of those apps' notifications are LOUD and I loved being able to just turn down the notifications and not the entire system or media...). Games that never had a problem before are freezing and jagged. My wallpaper keeps disappearing. Half of the pictures on my call list are gone. Half of my ringtones don't seem to be working. It keeps slamming programs open that I don't even use (why is Google Play music open all the time? I haven't even turned that program on for months!) You can't switch between active programs without going through an extra and unnecessary step. I had to completely rearrange my icons. It lags even doing the most basic of things-text messages? Using the phone? SWIPING ON MY LOCK SCREEN? It has more than once booted me out and went to the lock screen in mid-game (mid-tap, so it wasn't like there was any down-time). Did I say the colors are ugly? Because who decided that neon orange and lime green were awesome together in text? And weird aqua blue and yellow on your phone...and the phone button is still that regular green that clashes horribly with the aqua....

I think you get the point. This is a terrible system and it's ruining my phone. I have been more frustrated and angry with my phone in the last four days than I have in the entire six months I've owned it (and the entire 2 years I owned a Droid before that). I never thought I'd seriously consider buying an Apple, but I'm really getting there. I can't deal with a phone that won't work. And don't tell me stupid things like 'clear your cache'. First off, DUH thank you, and I've done that multiple times. I don't want to factory reset it (I shouldn't HAVE TO).

I think the only way to fix this would be to DOWNGRADE but from what I've seen on the net that looks like a slightly scary, many-stepped ordeal that might break your phone, and even under the replacement deal it'd be a hundred bucks to replace my smart phone if I broke it, so really not worth it.

I haven't had any problems on my AT&T 2014 Moto X. The color scheme? Not a fan, but I can always use another launcher to get around that. I have no lag and my battery life is definitely better than it was in KitKat. I did, however, do a factory reset after installing.

No issues on a UK Moto G 2013 on 5.0.2 after a factory reset. A bit laggy before the reset and GPS was shot to bits, all fixed and nice and smooth afterwards.

Signficant improvement in battery life (particularly idle drain) and better memory management than KitKat noted.

New notification system - well it has pros and it has cons, but I can work with it with a little help from some automation apps.
Two key things are missing - ability to entirely block notifications from the lock screen on a per app basis and of course a silent with working alarm setting.

Adaptive brightness - love it.

Recent apps - having disabled chrome tabs as recents - love it.

Battery and Data Usage screens in Settings - pretty but a step backwards in functionality. Need to be able to zoom on the battery screen and i miss the date range sliders on the Data Usage screen.

Looks - hated it the first day, didn't mind by the second, quite like it by the third day- now my girlfriend's phone still on KitKat looks plain weird.

I just updated my software and I've never experienced the problems like I'm having now.. Apps crashing, being kicked off the internet, phone freezing and running very slowly. Very frustrating! I used to love my s5 but this is ridiculous! Google and contacts are always coming up erred... Can someone in Samsung world help me! I've tried all the tips given except I won't do a factory reset. I have way too much personalization on my phone.

Android team:
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and I am extremely disappointed in its performance since upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop. There are several issues I do not like.
1) slow performance - opening apps or moving from one page to the next - the phone drags and is slow responding.
2) battery life - since installing android 5.0 the battery drains much faster than before
3) Sony Smartwatch2 app won't even run. Now I can't use my Sony Smartwatch.
I was going to upgrade to the GS6 when it gets released but not since it comes with Android 5.0 already. When I'm eligible for a phone upgrade my wife and I will go with the Nexus 6. The Galaxy S5 is way too disappointing.

I cannot believe how many of you are posting essays on here complaining before doing a factory reset. Lollipop completely changed the architecture of Android.

FACTORY RESET
