WiFi off or not?

My new nexus 5 says the wifi is off under settings - wifi. but when i go to settings - battery - "use since last full charge" it says that wifi use is 8% .then when I touch it ti says running 2d 1h 4m 51 s.

Is my wifi off or on. and if it's off why is giving the wrong reading under battery?

Is it using up my battery or not?

It's probably set (maybe by an app like Smart Wifi, maybe by the settings in WiFi) to check for wifi signals every so often. So it sits there off, but every once in a while Android wakes it up, checks for a signal, then turns it off. That would use some battery but not enough to make much difference to the time you ge between charges - maybe a few minutes.
