I guess this is expected, but I can't find it anywhere documented: in Lollipop you have the possibility of turning on encryption even though no PIN or password is set. It is probably pretty useless since the key must be stored in clear on the device. I did this, and I had an encrypted phone with no PIN.
Then, I set a PIN. But it seems it doesn't change anything: I don't get any pre boot authentication, so I suppose my device (S4GPE) is as unsecure as before.
If my assumption is correct, is there any other way than going in recovery mode an wiping the data partition? I don't really want to go through wipe&restore...
