Typying behavior in Google Keyboard -- backspace & deleting letters vs words.

So in the past I remember if I was typing something out in Google Keyboard and I half completed a word and then hit space, the rest of the word would appear. However, if I didn't want that word I could backspace once to get back to the word, and backspace again to completely delete the word.

Now it seems if I auto complete a word, and hit backspace once to get back to the end of the word, each additional backspace only removes one letter from the word so I would have to delete each letter manually.

I can't pin down exactly when this behavior changed, but maybe 2-3 months ago? Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and a way to get it back to the old behavior?

Thank you

There's a keyboard setting (in Settings>Language & Input>Google Keyboard>Gesture Typing) that allows you to delete the previous word by pressing the backspace and then swiping left. It takes a little bit to get the hang of, but at least there's a way to do what you're looking for.
