Need Granular DND controls for safety reasons

At night I turn on DND mode with "Priority Only" so I can sleep and not be disturbed by text and e-mail messages. The challenge is that I have an app I use to monitor an alarm system for someone's safety and desperately need to be able to get alerts from the alarm app and any emails generated by the alarm, when DND is on. But as far as I can see DND has no granularity for this type of thing.

Do I have any options? Maybe a 3rd party DND app?

I have a Google Nexus 6P running Nougat.

That's the point of my question - when I go to the settings screen I don't see any ability to add exceptions. The only exceptions I can choose are:
Alarms (On/Off)
Reminders (On/Off)
Events (On/Off)
Messages (from anyone; from contacts only; from starred contacts only; none)
Calls (from anyone; from contacts only; from starred contacts only; none)

I did find a few dedicated DND apps that seem to allow more granularity, but so far none of them seem to allow an app to be white listed. I'm a little surprised by the lack of flexibility, there are a fair number of safety related apps out there and there should be a means to add exceptions for them.

well if the app sends you an email then simply add that email address to your contacts and star it.
that means any email you receive from that address will not get silenced.
