Running AV on each phone doesn't seem as efficient as having the play store scan.

What am I missing?

The play store isn't the only way to get apps on your phone.

If I'm only playing in the play store, is it reasonable to go naked?

(I suppose, upon further consideration, if the app does any in-app downloads, that could contain a virus even if the original app in the play store is safe.? )

Just use common sense on what you install and you don't need a AV at all
