Sending single SMS message to multiple contacts causes MMS in FB Messenger

I'm experiencing an annoying (and costly) problem on my HTC Desire X. (Android 4.1.1) I use Facebook messenger as a default text messaging app as well. Every time I send a single message to multiple contacts at the same time, the message will be sent as MMS rather than SMS, even though it is a normal text message (not too many words).

After some testing I noticed it has to do with Facebook messenger's app. The default app doesn't have this problem. I went over all settings but can't seem to find anything that disables MMS for group messaging?

Any clue?

EDIT1: hot damn, 164 views and not a single aswer. It can't be that I am the only one experiencing this problem?

It does this by default with any SMS/MMS app, including the stock app. Don't know why but I believe its because when sending 1 text to 5 people it assumed your sending as a group message. But I can tell you my stock SMS/MMS does exactly the same.
