"Assistant" now requiring Google login?????

I've used Android 'Assistant' to help me dial bluetooth calls in my car for years. Now it wants me to login using Google. All I want to do is make a phone call, I don't want to be hassled by Google. Is this the end of 'Assistant'????? Is there any way to avoid the login??
