Looking at one of the Angry Birds walkthru videos (1-12) I noticed that the birds split into 3 or 4 birds halfway through the flight. How do you do that?

The small birds will spit when you tap on them in flight. There are a few other birds that have actions once touched.

You don't have to tap the bird. Just tap the screen.

AFAIK, all birds do something when you tap the screen. It's just that the red ones only make a noise.

The red birds are useless. They sound more like chicken. What's up with that!

Red birds actually pack quite a punch. The farther they travel before hitting the target, the harder they hit (hint... high trajectories give them a lot of speed and hit really hard), as well they're great for knocking over tall structures. They're more like a battering ram.

blue birds=ability to split into several smaller birds
yellow birds=ability to speed up when tapping the screen

Don't forget:

white birds = drop an egg/bomb
black birds = explode
green birds = boomerang (fly back in opposite direction)
Big Red birds = bigger/badder versions of the regular red birds.
