I personally use Settings Profiles for this and have it set to silence my phone from 11-6:30, unless someone important calls (like my wife, parents, boss, etc), or if I get a txt from our network saying there's a problem or the power is out or something to that effect.
There are several apps that can accomplish the same thing. I use Settings Profiles (from probeez) but there is also Tasker and a few others.
Plus the phone takes way too long to boot up you need to call 911 in the middle of the night, and Airplane mode would make you miss important calls. For example, it would suck to wake up to have a voicemail from your mom from 1AM saying your dad had a heart attack and was in the hospital, and you're getting that voicemail 6 hours too late because you had your phone off. - 06-01-2011, 10:54 AM #5

Night clock donate will act as a bedside clock and can be set to silence notifications. Calls can still come through, a plus for me.
