Google Latitude in background?

Folks,

I asked a question yesterday about Google Talk being available in the background, and that got me thinking about Google Latitude.

Does Google Latitude share your location with your friends even when you do not have the Google Latitude app open on your phone? Is there a setting that allows you to always share your position, even when your phone is not in use?

This is going to sound like a stalker, but I would like for my wife and I to be able to check on each other's location at all times, as well as allow our friends and family to check our location on igoogle. However, if it is only available when we have Latitude open on our phone, it won't be practical.

from what I've seen, it appears to run in the background, occasionally updating.

though if you want to be absolutely sure you're both always sharing, I'd just hit the home button instead of the back/return button, when switching out of the application.
