G+ messanger

I have the Galaxy Nexus and am trying to drop my texting and switch over to G+ messenger. I've been using it for a couple days now. One of the things I've noticed is that when my phone sits for a long time the messages do not notify me is there anyway to fix this or is it supposed to do that. I get tired of having to refresh the messenger all the time.

This isn't an answer to your question, but I do wonder if Google will eventually have G+ Messenger replace Gtalk. This is one of many instances in which Google has services overlapping one another. They've done a good job thus far streamlining things, but there is still work to do.
