Instant Messaging apps on VZW

I know that for Feature phones and 3G Multimedia phones on VZW, if you use the IM apps you are billed as text messages. Is that the same on the smartphones? If I am using Google Talk, Yahoo, MSN, etc, am I using my data or text messages?
