Residual data from uninstalling apps

I recently purchased my first Android device, a Nexus 4. I've started installing a few apps and have already deleted a few that I didn't like. What I'm wondering is - when you remove an application, are there any traces of the app left behind, and can repeated installing and uninstalling apps have any effects on the performance of the device?

I ask this because it was my understanding when using an iPhone that removing an app was "clean" and didn't leave any data or affect performance. However, with my windows based PC, uninstalling an application often leaves directories and folders behind, and sometimes registry entries. Could this be a similar issue with Android?
