Facebook Messenger SMS/MMS questions

So, I belatedly discovered that Facebook Messenger now supports SMS/MMS. Wonderful! Just a couple questions:

1. Do SMS/MMS still send/receive over the regular voice/SMS network or are they now purely over data 3G/4G?
2. If I send a regular text to someone over Facebook Messenger and they're on an ordinary phone, does the text show up as just my phone number or is my Facebook name included too?

Normal texting rates apply if texting from FB messenger. That being the case, I'd say it is using carrier sms system.

As far as the name, I think it shows you as normal phone contact as it would if you sent from normal texting app.

Does it solve the mms issue between iphone and android? ( Android won't receive pics from ios)

FYI - I don't want to debate what os is to blame, just looking for a solution.
