do text apps allow for free text?

i pay verizon $5 for 500 texts a month, if i download a text app, handcent, for example, do the texts still count toward your Verizon number of texts? do any apps aloow you to get free texts?

Yes. There's a thread over at DF that says you can use Google Voice, if you have one of their phone numbers, to send free texts using that phone number. But that doesn't work with Handcent, as I read it over there.
