Google Maps - Home Area Download

Okay. The app updated itself and asked me if I wanted to download my home area for ~100 MB.

I did it out of curiosity.

Is it solely for the purpose of being able to search for and get directions to something when I'm offline? If so, I can't really picture why I'd need it unless I were in Brazil visiting family and didn't want to pay for international data.

Am I missing something?

It is probably more for people who have spotty coverage or have low limited data plans.

How come the home map only lasts for 30 days and then the app deletes it? Can you have your home map saved without auto deletion?
