How does Android Auto select music in response to "OK, Google"

Using voice commands with Android Auto (i.e. "OK, Google"), I don't understand how AA responds to requests to play music from specific artists. If I say "Play Paul Simon", it seems to play a random Simon song (from somewhere).

How does it decide among:

1) His albums from my own library on my phone or in the cloud, or
2) Simon songs from the full GPM library, or
3) A "Paul Simon" themed radio station.

This is especially frustrating since AA provides no way to see a list of songs, albums or artists.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is there a written explanation of how "OK Google" handles music requests?
