I carry a 6th Gen iPod classic everywhere I go.

I always plug my iPod into my car stereo with iPod compatibility.

So how would Android Auto work for me if I prefer and use Android phone, but also iPod for music?

Negative. But if you get one of the Pioneer decks — and run cables from both inputs — it'll do Android Auto *and* CarPlay.

(But do iPods do CarPlay?)

Android Auto doesn't support iPods, it works with Android devices running Lollypop or better. If your car has an audio input jack then you could use that to play your iPod. If the iPod supports bluetooth that's another option. The best solution would be to move your music to an Android phone or put it in Google Play. Most cars that have Android Auto also support Car Play which works with iPhones so you could use an iPhone if you want to use iTunes.
