How often do you buy a new phone?
Hey A/C forumites!
So how often would you replace your phone? Today, I saw the Legend review on the front page. It's a very nice phone, clearly the successor to the Hero, and it has all the bells and whistles of Android Eclair goodness. I bought my Hero a little less than 6 months ago, I take good care of it so it still looks good, and I'm very satisfied with it overall. And I also paid a lot of money for it, so I'm in no hurry to dig into my pocket again. I know we will be getting an update to 2.1 in a month or two hopefully, so at least we'll be on par with the rest of the Android world in terms of software. However, I doubt that there'll be an official update to the next major version.
New phones are coming out one after the other every month, not to mention those that are already in the market, and they are superior in both hardware and software, while us, with our "old" phones, are left with a dilemma. If you bought your phone unlocked, you probably paid a hefty sum, and if you bought it from a carrier for a subsidized price, you probably have a one or two year contract. And you either have to accept that you're getting outdated fast, or you have to cough up more money to buy something new. Up until now, I usually replaced my phone once every two years. That's a period of time a phone can easily survive if you take good care of it. I guess with the old, simple phones this is not an issue, since they only have basic features. Am I wrong, expecting an expensive smartphone to stay "smart" for that amount of time? What's your opinion? I know OS fragmentation has been addressed many times, but even if we all got updates, that would still leave the rapid rate at which hardware advances.Last edited by Foxman; 04-03-2010 at 05:47 AM. Usually with my New Every Two...sometimes with my annual upgrade...

Ever since I got my first cellphone in 2005, I pretty much waited until I was eligible for upgrade. During 2009, I tried out three different devices since I was new to smartphones (Sidekick, iPhone, BB), ultimately keeping the BB, which I had for almost a year. Two months ago, I started my own contract and went to Verizon and bought a Droid. I can definitely hang onto my Droid until I'm due for an upgrade so it's no biggie. No point in having the latest and greatest since newer devices release all the time.

I buy them way too often. Every other month or so. I usually sell my old one to get a new one. I always have to try the latest and greatest. I do have to say I'm really satisfied with my Droid so I probably won't be getting a new one for awhile.

Whoops clicked on the wrong one
Meant to click on the 6-12 but accidentally clicked 3-6. I usually like to change when I can or when I get bored but my wallet disagrees with me a lot

I get pretty bored with phones pretty quickly, but can't really afford to buy a new one whenever the mood hits, but I'll scan ebay, forums, or craigslist and pick up a clean used phone if I can. That's how I managed to get my hands on a few of the phones that have cycled through my hands, Droid included. If I had more expendable cash, I'd pick up a new phone every few months, especially when the latest batch of cool phones comes out.

If I was a baller I would upgrade more often.

I've been known to get a new phone every 3-6 months but have been trying to keep my spending down to a certain limit lately. Sprint is the devil and is offering me a 2-year upgrade price only after 1-year (the reason why I got my Moment) so I'm gonna try to keep it yearly.

About every 1-2 years. With feature phones, it was every 2 years. With smartphones, it'll be once every year because of annual upgrades. I don't like the idea of switching phones often.

I've starting doing 1 year contracts so I can upgrade once a year if I choose. I'm loving my rooted, bugless beast 0.4 running droid. When my contract is up in December I may actually hold off on a renewal for awhile.
