Private message notification with PMs turned off

Hi, I have PMs turned off in my options. But I have a "1 New" next to the message icon under my username. Of course, when I click on it it takes me to my empty message folder. Does that mean someone sent me a message even though I have it off? Do they get notified that the message will not go through? I don't want to turn PMs on but I also don't want people thinking I've gotten messages from them when I haven't.

No it doesn't. If you click the down arrow you might have another type of notification (e.g., a new liked post)

Thanks for your help. I thought I was losing my mind for an instant because I could not find a down arrow and the only place it would go is private messages. Then I realized it might be because of adblock or noscript. When loading the forum on another browser I was able to see the arrow and find the other options. It was a 'like' received. Thanks again.
