    Question Is Android a mentality?

maybe its user mentalities on this and other boards but ive noticed theres a very open frame of mind with the droid.Unlike crackberry this community seems to accept people regardless of platform and personal taste in that platform. So is the opensource aspect of android leading itself to a better community? Then again maybe we haven't been overrun by twits yet.

I think DA6 said it best. Not as many kids here. My thought is maybe not as many adults acting like kids here. I really like this forum because of it.

I'm not sure of the reason for the level of high quality participation in this forum, but it has been impressive.

Excellent point. At one time I considered the Crackberry, before I got my Centro, and perhaps the main reason I decided to not go there was the forum. It was hideously mean-spirited and arrogant...rarely have I experienced what I saw there, just trying to learn more about it. It wasn't like that on any Palm forums, either pre or Pre, nor even on WinMoHel, not that I ever gave that much thought. Communities matter, esp. when you need help, or are willing to give it. The 'Droid forums have been among the very best. (Even the Pre forums had a lot of whiners! Of course, maybe Droiders don't have much to whine about!!)

Ive only been here a day or so but this forum does seem a lot different than crackberry.... seemed that on CB if you criticized a phone or said something wasnt working, you were too stupid to use the phone and anything that wasnt a BB was just a useless toy with no practical reasons to own. When I posted about wanting to switch from S1 and then S2 to an android I was told...just load this or that hybrid or leak and keep pulling the battery.

Maybe the frustration of having to install leaks and the constant battery pulls to get a BB working is spilling over into their forum life.

I used to be a regular over at the CrackBerry forums and I too felt that there was a lot of arrogance and mean spirited attitude over there. A lot of unnecessary bashing, which turned me away from the site pretty quickly. I haven't noticed that at all here. It's a very polite and willingness to help bunch here, so cheers to Android Central!

Yea just now I was accused of being a liar because I posted about being happy with a VZW who pushed my upgrade date up to Jan 24th even though I originally said I wanted it on the 3rd before I went back to college....

By the looks of some of the main players in the OSS community, they already do...

Seriously though, I do find this forum to be very friendly. I think it actually does have something to do with the fact that Android is Open Source, as a lot of us have come here from the open source / open gaming license / creative commons communities, and have brought that co-operative attitude with us.

    Long may it remain thus.

I like the people over at crackberry, but I agree Android Central's community is quite a bit more adult-acting.

When you have that many members you are bound to have some less than mature people around. It happens. :o

Yeah I kinda agree with you, however it seems to me the arrogance of knowing so much about your BB over there led to an intolerance toward BB beginners. I can't count how many times I've heard "Search is your Friend!"
I mean I understand that multiple posts can be annoying and crown the forums but I think a little courtesy and respect goes a long way. I have faith that this AC wont be anywhere near what CB is.

The key is to not leave the task of setting a tone to moderators. A cordial tone is set by people just being cool.

I've seen people here mention the Search function but they were nice about it. I thought it was sad that a new person always had to begin their post with "I did a search and couldn't find anything so please don't yell at me" no matter what the post was about. I think AC is a very laid back community and I'm glad to be a part of it.

I still go to the CB forums from time to time and am amazed with how many people are involved in Carrier Wars.....lol No matter what anyone posted about their carrier it would turn into a war for some reason. I'm so glad that doesn't happen here

I have a feeling that many who post in these forums are of a slightly older persuasion than might be found on other forums, hence giving a greater level of maturity than I have seen on other boards.

Yeah, kids are annoying. But, there's an app pre-installed on the Droid that increases the user's age by 10 years.

I dunno, if they bump that up too far, the site might get renamed to rhoidcentral

I've spent a year building up the iPhone blog forums before this and it was no different there. When I started there it had maybe 2 thousand members and now it's close to 30,000 and it keeps growing. Personally I try to weed all the bad seeds out early by letting them know I or any of the mods don't mess around. Whether they are disrespectful to other members when they have 5 posts or whatever they do to aggravate myself or someone else, I let them know. Either they act like a baby and never come back or they respect the forums. Pretty simple.
