s3 screen went out and now texting doesn't work

So my power button wouldn't allow my screen to come on after I tried it over and over. I took the battery out for over 30 seconds and when I started the phone up everything was fine. But now I can't see text's that I've sent nor received. I have metro pcs and a Galaxy s3

Is this related to just viewing texts or what?

A hardware failure I can understand but a hardware failure like display causing just " text " messages to have problems is very odd.
