Default ZTE Awe charging problems, help please

So this is a ZTE Awe from Virgin, rooted, running Jelly Bean 4.1.2
I only got it for my birthday in March, so I'm not happy about this.
When I got the phone I installed the app Battery Doctor. I don't think it's the problem but it is worth mentioning in case.
Just a few days ago the phone stopped charging when plugged in when being used. It would only charge slowly when the screen was asleep or the phone was off. Sometimes I have been able to get the phone to charge incredibly slowly while being used. But mainly the phone needs to be asleep or off and it charges at a snail's pace now. What is going on? I don't want to have to buy an expensive replacement battery or send the phone in because I need to be able to recieve calls and because it's rooted. Any and all help is appreciated, thank you in advance.

Have you tried a different cable? One of the charging pins may be damaged.
