(May I add that I did look up I/O, and got Input/Output, but didn't really see how it applied in this case.)

I guess it's more of a way for Google to receive input and give output of the direction their services/software is going. It's an event geared towards learning and providing developers with new tools. I'm sure it's a lot more deeper than that, but since i'm not affiliated with Google, nor have I been to such an event, I can only speak from a consumer perspective in the way I view it.

Where I went wrong was in looking up "I/O" instead of "Google I/O", which I've just done and am embarrassed to discover explains all. Apologies.
My phone assures me I'm a developer because I happened to press a certain button seven times, but I somehow think they'd be looking for people with rather higher skills and qualifications than that.

I always thought of Input/Output as Google took in all the reports, bugs and feedback over the past year, and applied some of that feedback to the updates.
