Samsung Galaxy S3 power button won't lock or turn phone off.

Hello! I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. Randomly today my power button started not responding. THe phone locks after sitting for a few minutes, but not by using the power button. It won't respond to turn the phone off using the power button. When I take the battery out and put it back in, the phone turns on automatically! HELP!
