Apps on stand-by or not?

Is it possible or even necessary to switch off apps as it is on an iPhone?
I assume this can drain the battery faster if there are loads of apps running on standby or do they automatically switch off when you close them down?

Welcome to Android Central! In the vast majority of cases, you don't need to close an app yourself. The times that you'd need to would be apps that are malfunctioning. Read these articles to understand more:
