Default K-9 email app on Moto-G - need to press send twice to get message sent

I am new to this forum. I've been using K-9 as my email app for about a month. I really like the app but have the following annoying issue:

When I go to send a message, I need to press the send button twice (at least). The first time I press it, the message stays open and it appears that nothing happens. If I press it a second time, it is sent. If it isn't sent and I press the previous screen arrow, it asks if I want to save it as a draft. If I say yes, it goes into the drafts folder. If I say no, it goes away. Once it's in the drafts folder, I can open it and press the send button. This time the message closes on the phone and is sent.

Why do I need to go through this to send a message? What am I doing wrong? Is there a setting I can adjust to eliminate this issue?

    Many thanks in advance.
