HTC sync manager says my phone's not there after 20 seconds of being connected!

Help please!!! I've spent all day trying to sync my phone with manager and about 20 seconds after I plug in the USB it tells me my phone has been disconnected! What's going on? What have I inadvertently changed? How do I fix it please - in real simpleton language. I need to download all my photo's before I go on holiday.

I would first try rebooting the computer and the phone. Also try a different cable.
