What happens to the old version of an app when it gets updated? And what is cloud service?

I have Motorola Moto G with 8 GB. I had to buy the 8 GB due to the budget constraints. So, what happens to the old version of the application when it gets updated? Does it get replaced? If not how to remove the old version? Sorry for so many basic questions.

And what exactly is the function of cloud?

It just gets the added features or bug fixes added. It won't take up all of the data that it did when you first installed.

Cloud services can be for quite a few different things, but most people just use it for backing up photos they take. Always good to have it in another place other than your phone.
