Welcome to Android Central! An .apk file is an installer file for an app. It's like an .exe Windows file that installs a program on your laptop. It won't have any of your actual contact data in there.

Are none of your contacts associated with your Google account? You would be able to see them easily on any computer or device that can connect to the web.

The info you want, a contact, will not be in there I think. I could be wrong.

You can try APKTOOL to get into it. You could try renaming it to contacts.apk.zip and unzipping it (it is more or less a zip file) you could try Apk Viewer

You should be backing the contacts up to your Gmail account. I know hindsight is 20/20 but keep it in mind for later
