Default Computer recognizes my phone as a camera not a Phone

I'm trying to connect my Samsung phone to my computer to use with the Android SDK manager and the ADB console, but the computer recognizes my phone as a Camera and adb doesn't recognize it either, how do I fix this?

I'm locked out of my phone and trying to unlock it using methods from the xda developers website (I can't post a link)

    Please help?

Welcome to Android Central! Why are you locked out of your phone? If you can get past your lockscreen, it should be a simple matter of swiping the notification shade down, tapping the USB connection notification, and selecting MTP instead of PTP.

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING, I'll be on vacation from 7/27 to 8/13, with only intermittent web access. So if you don't see me around much, don't worry, I didn't defect to another site or anything like that.
