Canada and USA travel

I am going to be spending a lot of time in both Canada and the US for the next 6-12 months. I currently have a Verizon GS3 with unlimited data and would like to keep the plan for the time I am in the US and once I return. Any advice on a new phone that would work in both countries? If I am going to buy a phone for Canada (have not picked a carrier yet so I will leave that open) do any have a radios for Verizon LTE once I come back to the US, then I could just switch sims when I travel.

Afaik, all of the major Canadian carriers use GSM radios for their phones, so they will not work on Verizon when you come back. You can buy a cheap phone just for use while you're out of the country.
