toshiba laptop, windows 8 does not recognize samsung galaxy S4 as a drive

I lost my camera folder in Samsung Galaxy S4 cell phone. There were 45 photos in it. The whole folder disappeared automatically, I did not delete it. I do not have sd card in the cellphone. I did not have a google account till yesterday. So I have to try recovering those photos using a third party software, which requires my cellphone to be connected to laptop by cable. It also requires the laptop to recognize the cellphone as an external drive, not as a device. I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 8. It recognizes the cellphone as a device , not as a drive. How can I make I recognize as a drive? Thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! Not sure if this applies to Samsung, but the recent slew of Windows updates included an erroneous update that borked my Nexus 5 driver, making it think it was an Acer ADB device.
