Moto X SMS app

Hi guys, I recently switched from an iPhone 4s to a Motorola moto x and I absolutely love it! The only problem is that the stock messenger app is really bland, so I downloaded chompsms to use instead. I love the app but today I got a notification that the free trial period is up and that I can continue to use it but now I have annoying adds on the top of my SMS app. Do you guys recommend any "real" free SMS apps? Should I give hangouts a try? I don't know, I like how I customized chomp to have a black background and dark chat bubbles with white text to save battery.

Welcome to AC
I love Hangouts, but you can't change the background. Other popular ones are What's App and Textra, and I believe both allow custom backgrounds.

I use Hangouts for the simple easy of it. But Handcent is popular and GoSMS.
