Is it possible to silence the ringer for specific contacts?

No, but you could make a recording of a quiet room, and assign that as the ringtone.

Perhaps using Tasker this may be possible? I'm not a Tasker user, but know it has a lot of customizations and may be something to look at.

It's available in the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ndroid.taskerm

Good idea. It actually appears Tasker can do this. I got as far as setting up a contact to be muted, and I think it will work.

Ringtone Maker can edit any audio file. Just pick one you don't want (or copy of one you want), load it into Ringtone Maker, shorten the time to 0, lower the volume to 0, and save it as something like "silence.mp3". Use that for your "silent ringtone". You'll get 0 sound for 0 time for that contact.
