Default Problems with galaxy mini messaging

I've had my phone for about two years and last night it ran out of battery. Now I've charged it and turned it back on and sent some messages to a few friends. I think they received my messages because I had a delivery report but couldn't see the message I'd just sent on the thread. I think I then received a message back as the red notification box came up when I went on the messages and I'm sure I read the beginning of a reply on the overall screen but when I then clicked on the message to read it, it then disappeared. How do I solve this problem? Any ideas please???
    Thank you!
