Phone Receiving Old Email Notifications

A

AC Question

Hard to explain.. A few weeks ago I started receiving old email notifications on my phone. I typically receive 3 to 5 emails a week, including junk/spam, but all of a sudden I started getting thousands a day according to my notifications.
When I click the notification, I go to my inbox and only see the new messages since last time I checked, which is (maybe) 1 or 2. Then I immediately start getting notified of incoming messages again.
I started to notice that these "emails" are from many any years ago (like 10+, I have a very old email account).
It seems to be "catching up", as the emails are starting to get more recent, but I estimate I still have a month or more to go. It wouldn't be a big deal, but it is killing my battery within about 3 hours (verified by Exchange Services eating up more than 80% of my batt life).
My wife "may have" messed with my email settings, but I don't see any obvious solutions when I go to my MSN settings.
What can I do?
