ASUS Zenphone 6, need to update Android version?

I am a fairly new smart phone user, previously using Samsung S3, when lost recently replaced with ASUS Zenphone 6. I read at Google founders letter "The latest update, Ice Cream Sandwich, has a beautiful interface that adapts to the form of the device. "
Does Android update itself to the latest version or do we have to download it?

You will receive a notification when a system update, or indeed other type of update, is available for your device.
I'm not familiar with Asus devices, but somewhere on your device you will be able to check whether an update is ready to download.
