I just got my new watch and didn't get a prompt for an update. Is that because my watch already came with the battery update? Or do I have to go somewhere in settings to upgrade it?

You already have it. Newer batches are coming out of the factory with the newest software version 
But if you're still undecided, there should be an option to check for updates somewhere in the settings.
