Hi, I'm looking for a inexpensive tablet that performs well. I currently have a dell venue 7 but I wasn't too happy about the battery life and app crashes. I'm split between the nexus and galaxy tab and I'm hoping to get some opinions here. Battery life is pretty important to me as is compatibility with apps. My dell venue is running kit kat and I believe that the galaxy tab 4 uses the same os where as the nexus runs jellybean. Are more apps compatible with jellybean than kit kat? Would appreciate some opinions or any other suggestions for a cheap tablet.

    Thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! Being a Nexus device, the Nexus 7 gets system updates first. Both the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7's are on Android 4.4.4. I suspect the 2012 Nexus 7 won't get updated to Android L, but it's a good bet the 2013 version will.

The 2013 Nexus 7 is still an excellent tablet, and an even better value now that you can get it refurbished and sometimes even new for around $160-$200. The main thing that is lacking is an external SD card slot, so I would suggest getting a 32 GB model. The Tab 4 does have an SD card slot, but I would be concerned about sluggish performance due to Samsung's busy TouchWiz interface. In addition, the Tab 4 does not have MHL or Slimport compatibility, which means you can't hook it up to an HDTV via HDMI cable. On the other hand, the Nexus 7 is compatible with Slimport.

Apps will usually be compatible with the latest OS version, as long as the developer is still supporting it.

    I definitely recommend the Nexus 7 (2013).
