My Samsung Galaxy Tab3 is not showing on my tv

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. I then purchased Netflix and then purchased the MHL cord and HDMI converter and HDMI line to connect to the television. The movies are not showing on the tv; why not? Do I need to add a service pack for the device to recognize the connections?
