Why is my phone stuck on Invalid SIM card, emergency calls only?

I have a year and a bit old Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 and last night it started showing the message Invalid SIM, emergency calls only.

I've tried restarting it, popping out the SIM and putting it back in. I've done a factory reset and still nothing... Is there anything else I can do myself, or is it time to go get a new phone?

There may have been damage to the SD card, and it may need to be replaced. Contact your carrier and describe the situation, see if they will send a replacement.
