my external speaker on xperia s has stopped working

I can hear people on the phone fine but I have no audio to play music and no ringtone

Welcome to Android Central! Does this persist after a reboot? If so, you could try a full factory reset as well, although that's a hassle. The speaker has probably failed--you may want to bring it to a repair shop to get an estimate, or contact Sony if you're still under warranty.
