How do you get the NFC icon off in your notifications bar across the top of your phone?

I don't know what I did yesterday. Something came up while I was holding my phone and now I have the NFC icon on my notifications bar. I want it off. I just need to know how to turn it off. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

The phone model would be useful info. To turn off NFC on my Moto X I have to go into settings, then tap "more" under wireless and networks then uncheck the box for NFC.

As hallux says, the phone model would indeed be useful. Phones vary. I haven't even got More under Wireless & Networks. I pull down on my G3, scroll the icons at the top till I get to NFC, then toggle on or off.
Well, at least you know now how to do it on the Moto X and the G3.
