I stumbled on Android device manager and without realising, locked the phone such that I have to input a password every time I wish to use it. Anyway of unlocking/disabling this other than a delete everything?

Welcome to Android Central! I don't think Android Device Manager does that. Did you encrypt the phone? Are you able to go to Settings>Security>Screen Lock, and change the unlock mode?

If Android Device Manager does in fact do that, then try going to Settings>Security>Device Administrators, and uncheck Android Device Manager.
